Experiment No. - 08 :- Replacing Ribbon / Cartridge in a Dot Matrix Printer (DMP)

1. Aim of the Experiment

To safety inspect, disengage, remove a worn-out fabric ribbon cassette, properly route and seat a new ink ribbon cartridge between the printhead guide and platen roller in a Dot Matrix Printer (DMP), and verify print intensity via self-test.

2. Equipment & Tool Requirements

• Printer Unit: Dot Matrix Printer (e.g., TVS Champion / Epson LX-310 / LQ-1150)
• Replacement Media: Compatible Fabric Ink Ribbon Cassette / Cartridge
• Tools & Cleaning Material: Lint-free Cloth, Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA), Flathead Screwdriver, Plastic Gloves
• Print Media: Continuous Tractor-Feed Paper or Standard Single-Sheet A4 Paper

3. Step-by-Step Procedure

SECTION A: Safety & Removal of Old Ribbon Cassette

1. Turn off the printer power switch and unplug the AC power cord from the mains outlet.
2. Open the printer top cover and allow the printhead assembly to cool down if recently operated.
3. Slide the printhead carriage manually to the center position.
4. Unclip the side retaining latches holding the old ribbon cassette, carefully lift the ribbon out from between the printhead nose and ribbon guide mask, and remove the old unit.

SECTION B: Installing New Ribbon Cartridge & Proper Routing

1. Unpack the new ribbon cartridge and verify that the ribbon fabric is not twisted or folded.
2. Position the ribbon cassette body into its mounting slots until both side clips snap into locking position.
3. Carefully insert the exposed fabric ribbon between the printhead face and the ribbon mask/platen guide.
4. Gently slide the printhead carriage back and forth to ensure smooth travel without snagging or creasing the ribbon.

SECTION C: Tension Adjustment & Offline Printing Self-Test

1. Rotate the manual ribbon feed knob on top of the cassette clockwise to eliminate any fabric slack.
2. Close the printer top cover, reconnect the AC power cord, and load paper into the tractor/friction feed assembly.
3. Hold down the LF/FF or Font button while turning ON the power switch to trigger the DMP Font & Graphic Self-Test.
4. Check the printed text density for uniform dark print output without smudging or missing character lines.
