Experiment No. - 07 :- Installing a Printer and Carrying Out Hardware/Software Self-Tests

1. Aim of the Experiment

To unpack, physically connect, install device drivers, configure system properties, and execute offline hardware self-test prints as well as OS-level diagnostic test pages for a local printer.

2. Equipment & Tool Requirements

  • Printer Unit: Laser Printer / Inkjet Printer / Dot-Matrix Printer with Toner/Ink Cartridge installed
  • Host System: Desktop Computer running Windows / Linux Operating System
  • Connectivity & Media: USB Data Cable (Type-A to Type-B), Power Cable, A4 Paper Rim
  • Software & Drivers: Printer Driver Installation Package (CD/DVD or OEM Executable / CUPS Driver)

3. Step-by-Step Procedure

SECTION A: Unpacking & Physical Hardware Setup

1. Unbox the printer, remove all orange protective packing tapes, transit locks, and internal drum guards.
2. Install the ink/toner cartridge securely into the printer assembly and load A4 paper into the primary paper tray.
3. Connect the USB cable between printer and host PC. Attach the power cord and switch ON power.

SECTION B: Hardware Standalone Self-Test (Without PC)

1. Turn off the printer power using the front panel power switch.
2. Press and hold the Feed / Resume / Cancel button while turning the power ON.
3. Release the button when motor movement begins; verify that the internal font page, mechanical alignment test page, or configuration report prints successfully.

SECTION C: Driver Installation & OS Test Page Printing

1. Execute the printer driver installer software on the host operating system or allow Plug-and-Play auto-detection.
2. Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers (or CUPS Admin in Linux) and confirm the printer appears as Ready.
3. Right-click the installed printer icon, select Printer Properties, click Print Test Page, and verify print execution.
