Objectives
To understand the Socket architecture (LGA vs. PGA).
To learn the correct orientation and alignment of a CPU.
To apply thermal paste and install a cooling solution.
Tools and Components Required
Motherboard (with a compatible CPU socket).
CPU (Intel or AMD).
CPU Fan/Heatsink (Thermal solution).
Thermal Paste (if not pre-applied to the cooler).
Anti-static wrist strap (recommended) or a grounded work surface.
Philips head screwdriver.
Safety Precautions
Static Discharge: Always touch a grounded metal object before handling components to discharge static electricity.
Pin Protection: Never touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the CPU or the pins inside the motherboard socket. Even natural oils from your skin can cause connectivity issues.
Zero Pressure: The CPU should "drop" into place. Never force it.
Procedural Steps
Step 1: Open the Socket
Locate the CPU socket on the motherboard. Push down on the small metal load lever and move it slightly sideways to release it from the hook. Lift the lever and the metal load plate (if applicable) to reveal the socket.
Step 2: Align the CPU
Identify the alignment markers. Most CPUs have a small golden triangle in one corner. This must match the triangle engraved on the corner of the motherboard socket. Additionally, many CPUs have notches on the sides that match plastic tabs in the socket.
Step 3: Seat the CPU
Gently lower the CPU vertically into the socket. Ensure the alignment markers match perfectly. The CPU should sit completely flat without any wobbling.
Step 4: Secure the Load Plate
Lower the metal load plate over the CPU. Press the load lever back down and hook it into its original position.
Note: You may feel a significant amount of resistance here; this is normal as it ensures a tight connection between the pins and the CPU.
Step 5: Apply Thermal Paste
If your cooler does not have pre-applied gray paste on the bottom, apply a small "pea-sized" amount of thermal paste directly onto the center of the CPU’s metal heat spreader.
Step 6: Install the Heatsink/Fan
Place the heatsink over the CPU, aligning the mounting screws or clips with the holes in the motherboard.
Intel: Push the four pins down in a "cross" pattern (diagonal) until they click.
AMD: Hook the clips onto the plastic brackets or screw the mounting bolts into the backplate.
Step 7: Connect Power
Plug the 4-pin or 3-pin cable from the CPU fan into the header labeled CPU_FAN on the motherboard.
5. Observations
Confirm the CPU is sitting flush.
Verify the fan cable is not obstructing the fan blades.
Ensure the motherboard is resting on a non-conductive surface (like the box it came in) during the process.
6. Conclusion
The CPU has been successfully installed. The system is now ready for RAM installation and subsequent testing within the chassis.
