Practical - 79 :- Installing a Hard Drive And Power Supply

Objective

To demonstrate the correct procedure for installing a Power Supply Unit and a SATA Hard Drive, ensuring all electrical and data connections are secure.

Required Tools & Components

  • Tools: Phillips head screwdriver, anti-static wrist strap.

  • Hardware: ATX Case, Power Supply Unit (PSU), SATA Hard Drive (HDD or SSD).

  • Cables: SATA Data cable (usually red or black), SATA Power cable (from PSU).

Part 1: Installing the Power Supply Unit (PSU)

  1. Positioning: Place the PSU into the mounting chamber of the cabinet.

    • Tip: If the case has a bottom vent, face the PSU fan downward. If not, face the fan toward the motherboard.

  2. Mounting: Align the screw holes on the rear of the PSU with the chassis. Insert and tighten the four mounting screws.

  3. Motherboard Power (24-pin): Locate the largest cable bundle and plug the 24-pin ATX connector into the motherboard. Ensure the plastic clip "clicks" into place.

  4. CPU Power (4/8-pin): Plug the 4-pin or 8-pin connector into the dedicated socket near the CPU socket to provide dedicated power to the processor.

Part 2: Installing the Hard Disk Drive (HDD/SSD)

  1. Physical Mounting: Slide the 3.5" HDD (or 2.5" SSD) into the drive bay. Secure it with at least two screws on each side to minimize vibrations.

  2. SATA Power: Find the flat, L-shaped power connector from the PSU. Plug it into the longer slot on the back of the drive.

  3. SATA Data: Connect one end of the SATA data cable to the smaller slot on the drive and the other end to a SATA port on the motherboard (preferably SATA_0 or SATA_1).

Safety & Verification Checklist

  • [ ] Static Safety: Did you ground yourself before touching the motherboard?

  • [ ] Cable Integrity: Are cables clear of the CPU and case fans to prevent obstructions?

  • [ ] BIOS Check: After assembly, power on the system and press F2/Del to enter BIOS. Verify that the "Storage" or "Information" section lists your hard drive model.
