What are the 4 types of computer networks?

A computer network is a group of interconnected computers that enables communication and resource sharing. Networks can be categorized based on their size and scope. Here are the four main types of computer networks:

1. Local Area Network (LAN)

  • Definition: A LAN connects computers within a small area, such as a building or office.
  • Characteristics:
    • Uses inexpensive hardware like hubs and Ethernet cables.
    • Offers high-speed data transfer.
    • Provides enhanced security.

2. Personal Area Network (PAN)

  • Definition: A PAN is a small network for personal devices, typically within a range of 10 meters.
  • Characteristics:
    • Connects devices like smartphones, laptops, and tablets.
    • Can be wired (using USB) or wireless (using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi).
  • Examples:
    • Body Area Network: Moves with a person, like a mobile network.
    • Home Network: Connects devices within a home without internet access.

3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

  • Definition: A MAN covers a larger geographic area, connecting multiple LANs within a city.
  • Characteristics:
    • Used by government agencies and businesses for local communication.
    • Connects various LANs through telephone lines or fiber optics.
  • Uses:
    • Banking communication, airline reservations, and educational institutions.

4. Wide Area Network (WAN)

  • Definition: A WAN spans a large geographical area, such as states or countries.
  • Characteristics:
    • Connects multiple LANs and MANs over long distances using telephone lines, fiber optics, or satellite links.
    • The internet is the largest example of a WAN.
  • Advantages:
    • Centralized data management and high bandwidth for efficient communication.
    • Facilitates global business operations.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Higher security risks and setup costs.
    • Troubleshooting can be complex due to the vast area covered.
