EXPERIMENT NO - 01 :- Orientation Visit to Institute Facilities: System Maintenance Labs, Server Rooms, IT Cell, Workshop & Stores

1 Objectives

  • Identify key physical spaces, emergency exits, and electrical isolation switches across the institute.
  • Recognize hardware, networking, and server components deployed in a real-world IT training environment.
  • Demonstrate understanding of ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) safety, ground bonding point locations, and fire suppression systems (CO₂/Dry Chemical).
  • Perform inventory mapping and safety risk assessments according to NCVT trade standards.

2 Tools, Instruments & Safety Gear Required

Item Description / Specification Quantity
01 ESD Wrist Strap (Anti-Static Wristband with Alligator Clip) 1 per Trainee
02 Digital Multimeter (Auto-ranging, CAT III 600V) 1 Set
03 Non-Contact Voltage Tester (NCVT Pen) 1 Unit
04 Facility Layout Checklist & Logbook 1 Copy
05 Safety Helmet & Insulated Rubber Footwear (10kV Rated) 1 Set

⚠️ SAFETY PRECAUTIONS & COMPLIANCE

  • ESD Warning: Always clip your anti-static wrist strap to a verified chassis ground point before touching open PC cases or sensitive PCBs.
  • Electrical Safety: Do not touch energized high-voltage distribution panels, UPS battery banks, or power distribution units during the visit.
  • Fire Safety: Identify Class C & E (CO₂-based) fire extinguisher points before entering high-density rack areas.

3 Procedure & Work Steps

Step 1: Main ICTSM Computer Laboratory

  1. Inspect workstation benches to locate ESD grounding mats, ground bus bars, and isolated power outlets.
  2. Verify potential between bench grounding point and mains earth using a digital multimeter; confirm reading is R ≤ 1.0 Ω.
  3. Log workstation specs (CPU type, RAM capacity, motherboard chipset, diagnostic cards).

Step 2: Central Server Room & IT Cell

  1. Identify server rack enclosures (42U Server Racks, Patch Panels, Managed Switches, KVM Switches).
  2. Trace structural cabling paths (Cat6 / Fiber Optic patch cords running from patch panel ports to switch interfaces).
  3. Observe online UPS systems (KVA rating, battery bank setup, and neutral-to-earth voltage check targeting VN-E < 1.0V AC).

Step 3: Central Store & Maintenance Depot

  1. Examine storage procedures for spare components (motherboards, SMPS units, HDDs, SSDs, crimping tools).
  2. Note anti-static shielding bags (Faraday cage bags) used for storing sensitive components.
  3. Review the inventory log register format used for issuing and receiving workshop consumables and tools.
