Constructing a Simple Circuit
Materials:
DC Circuit: DC power supply, lamp, fuse, SPST switch, wires.
AC Circuit: Low-voltage AC supply, lamp, fuse, SPST switch, wires.
Tools: Multimeter.
Safety: Always turn OFF the power supply before making connections.
Part 1: Simple DC Circuit
Procedure:
Check Components: Use a multimeter on continuity mode to verify the lamp, fuse, and switch are functional.
Assemble: Connect the components in series:
+
DC Supply → Fuse → Switch → Lamp →-
DC Supply
Test:
Turn on the DC supply.
Close the switch to turn the lamp ON.
Open the switch to turn the lamp OFF.
Part 2: Simple AC Circuit
Procedure:
Assemble: Connect the components in series, placing the fuse and switch on the live wire:
Live Wire (AC Supply) → Fuse → Switch → Lamp → Neutral Wire (AC Supply)
Test:
Turn on the AC supply.
Close the switch to turn the lamp ON.
Open the switch to turn the lamp OFF.
Report & Analysis:
Draw diagrams for both circuits.
Explain the role of the fuse as a safety device.
Explain the role of the switch as a control device.
State why it's a safety best practice to place the fuse and switch on the live wire in an AC circuit.
