Aim : Setting up a Basic Collaboration Tool Similar to Net Meeting

Objective

To set up and test a basic collaboration tool that supports chat, application sharing, remote desktop access and control, and VOIP communication, similar to Microsoft Net Meeting.

Tools Required

  • Collaboration software like Jitsi Meet (open-source) or alternatives such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams
  • Remote desktop software like TeamViewer or AnyDesk for remote control
  • Computer with microphone and speakers/headset
  • Internet connection

Procedure

Step 1: Setting up the Collaboration Tool

  1. Open a modern web browser.
  2. Go to https://meet.jit.si (for Jitsi Meet) or launch your preferred collaboration tool.
  3. Create a new meeting room by entering a unique room name.
  4. Share the meeting link with the participants.

Step 2: Using Chat and Application Sharing

  1. Once inside the meeting, open the chat panel.
  2. Send chat messages to participants to confirm connectivity.
  3. Click on “Share Screen” and select whether to share the entire screen, a window, or a browser tab.
  4. Allow participants to view the shared application in real time.

Step 3: Remote Desktop Access and Control

  1. Launch TeamViewer or AnyDesk on host and client machines.
  2. Share the session ID or invite the collaborator.
  3. Host grants remote control access.
  4. Collaborator controls the remote desktop while communicating over the collaboration tool.

Step 4: Setting up and Testing VOIP

  1. Ensure your microphone and speakers/headset are configured properly.
  2. Enable audio in the collaboration tool.
  3. Test speaking and listening between participants to verify VOIP quality.

Observations

  • Chat messages should be sent and received instantly.
  • Screen/application sharing should be smooth and visible to all participants.
  • Remote desktop control must allow seamless mouse and keyboard control.
  • VOIP must offer clear audio communication with minimal latency.
