Practical - 74 :- To identify and understand the functions of various ports, connectors, and control buttons located on the front and rear panels of a Desktop PC.

Objective

To identify and understand the functions of various ports, connectors, and control buttons located on the front and rear panels of a Desktop PC.

I. Rear Panel Identification

The rear panel is the primary interface for connecting power and external peripheral devices.

  • SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply): An electronic circuit that converts AC input voltage into regulated DC supply for internal components.

  • SMPS Fan: Internal fan used to radiate heat from the SMPS to the outside.

  • Power In Socket: Input for 220V AC main supply.

  • PS-2 Ports: 6-pin round connectors for legacy input devices.

    • Purple: Keyboard

    • Green: Mouse

  • USB Ports (Universal Serial Bus): Used for connecting modern peripherals (Printers, Webcams, etc.). USB 3.0 is preferred for high-speed data transfer.

  • Video Interface Ports:

    • VGA Port (15-pin Female): Analog connection for Monitor/LCD.

    • DVI Port: High-speed serial link for digital displays.

    • HDMI Port: High-definition interface for both video and multi-channel sound.

  • LAN Port: Network port used to connect the PC to a router or other computers.

  • Audio Ports:

    • Green: Headphones or Speakers

    • Pink: Microphone (Mic)

    • Blue: Line-in

  • Expansion Slots: Used to install add-on cards (Graphics, Sound, etc.) to enhance motherboard capabilities.

II. Front Panel Identification

The front panel provides easy access for daily operations and frequently swapped devices.

  • Power Switch: The main button used to switch ON the computer.

  • Reset Switch: Used to reboot the system if the computer becomes unresponsive ("stuck-up").

  • LED Indicators:

    • Power LED: Glows to indicate the system is receiving power.

    • HDD LED: Flashes or glows to indicate the Hard Disk Drive is actively reading or writing data.

  • Optical Drive Slot (DVD-Writer): The top cabinet slot reserved for CD/DVD ROMs.

  • Front USB & Audio: Conveniently located ports for USB drives, microphones, and headphones, avoiding the need to reach the back of the PC.
