Experiment -14 :- Scanning Using Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)

AIM

To configure, operate, and troubleshoot a scanner using an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) for high-efficiency multi-page document digitization.

APPARATUS / TOOLS REQUIRED
  • Workstation with installed OS (Windows 10/11 or Linux Ubuntu)
  • Multi-function Printer/Scanner unit equipped with ADF assembly
  • Scanner Driver Software & Document Scanning Utility
  • Multi-page document stack (Letter/A4 size, clean edges)
  • USB Data Cable / Network Connection (RJ-45)

PRACTICAL PROCEDURE

Step 1: Document Preparation

  • Inspect physical pages for staples, paper clips, sticky notes, or damaged edges to prevent mechanical jams.
  • Verify paper size compliance (Standard A4, Letter, or Legal) according to scanner feed tray specifications.

Step 2: ADF Tray Loading

  • Open the ADF input support and slide the width guides outward.
  • Place the neatly stacked pages face up (or according to hardware directional icons) into the feeder tray.
  • Adjust paper width guides firmly against paper edges without buckling the sheets.

Step 3: Software & Parameter Configuration

  • Launch the scanning application on host system (e.g., Windows Fax and Scan, NAPS2, or Vendor OEM Utility).
  • Set Document Source parameter to ADF / Feeder.
  • Configure scan profiles:
    • Resolution: 200–300 DPI (standard document archival)
    • Color Mode: Grayscale / Color
    • Output Format: Multi-page PDF

Step 4: Execution & Monitoring

  • Execute the scanning command from software GUI.
  • Monitor automated pickup rollers as sheets feed through the optical sensor path sequentially.
  • Verify continuous operation and absence of multi-sheet feeds.

Step 5: Output Verification & Clearance

  • Save output file to specified path directory with standardized naming conventions.
  • Inspect generated digital file for rotation, clarity, page sequence, and missing pages.
  • Clear processed documents from output tray and ensure top ADF cover is closed securely to block dust ingress.
TROUBLESHOOTING & MAINTENANCE MATRIX
Fault Observed Probable Cause Corrective Action
Paper Jam in Feeder Staples left in pages, bent edges, or overloaded tray. Release ADF top cover latch, carefully extract paper along feed direction, reduce stack volume.
Multi-Sheet Feed (Double Pick) Worn pickup rollers or static charge between pages. Clean pickup and separation rollers with isopropyl alcohol wipes; fan paper stack prior to loading.
Vertical Lines on Scanned Image Dust or debris on ADF narrow glass strip. Clean narrow ADF glass strip with a lint-free microfiber cloth and mild glass cleaner.
PRECAUTIONS
  • Never force paper out of ADF rollers without opening the clearance cover mechanism.
  • Avoid feeding wet ink prints, carbon papers, or heavily creased documents into ADF assembly.
  • Keep top feeder flap closed when not in use to preserve internal optical sensors from environmental contaminants.
