Experiment- 47 :- Identification Laptop Components and their Main Functions

Aim :-  Identification Laptop Components and their Main Functions

  1. Hard Drive stores data permanently.
  2. CPU (Central Processing Unit) is a small chip inside the laptop that does the main processing of the data that is being imputed or action from the user.
  3. RAM (Random Access Memory) is the temporary storage of data or it is the space used for data processing.
  4. Battery is the main source of power to the motherboard and its components
  5. CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) Battery used for keeping the date and time up to date and keeping the BIOS (Basic Input Output Settings) that stores and keeps BOIS settings up to date.
  6. Motherboard holds in place all other main component of the laptop
  7. Keyboard is one of the main user interface used for typing (imputing) data into the computer
  8. Speakers produces sound
  9. Wifi Card used for connecting the laptop to wireless networks

The Assembling of a Laptop
After dissembling a laptop and cleaning/dusting out the components, you will need to assemble the laptop back. When assembling a laptop, you have to remember what you took out first and what was the last thing that you took out. The last thing that you took out, would be the first thing that you fit in back again. Also, it would be good to take photos of the connections in the laptop before removing the cables.

The main idea that Francis and Elizah learnt during the topic of assembling and dissembling a laptop were:

  • Identifying the main components of a laptop
  • Learning the main functions of the components
  • They were able to compare the parts/cables of a Desktop computer to the Laptop.
  • The position of the laptop components on the motherboard
  • Laptop motherboards come in different sizes, shape and the laptop’s case is manufactured in a way to house the different types of motherboards
  • Comparing laptops of older version with nowadays laptop, the assembling and dissembling is very different for different brands as manufacturers have improved their laptops over time

The Dissembling of a Laptop
When dissembling a laptop, it can be quite tricky as different manufacturers assemble their laptops very differently for different models. The necessary tools that is required for dissembling a laptop are screw drivers (Philips and Flat head), plastic verge and a paper clip. The main purpose of dissembling the laptop is to identify laptop parts and their functions.

Steps in Dissembling a HP laptop
  1. Remove the Battery
  2. Remove the screws on the bottom of the laptop
  3. Disconnect all connectors (wires). Remove components that are attached to the motherboard:
  •  Hard Drive
  • RAM
  • Wifi Card
  • Optical Drive
  • Keyboard
  • Case Fan etc.
4.Remove the motherboard loosening all cables attached.

After dissembling a laptop, remove dust from the component and the laptop case using a paint brush or if you have a blower, then use that to remove dust especially from the laptop case. Francis and Elizah explained that by removing dust from the components and the laptop case will enable the fan to perform at its maximum speed so that the CPU does not over heat because if the CPU over heats, the laptop will uninterruptible shut down by itself.
